Widescreen display bug (shifts image left)

Ok, this only happens when I'm playing a 3d game, and only happens sometimes.
3d card= ati radeon HD 4870, monitor=LG L227wtg (1680x1080 @ 75hx max)
(possible resolutions: 1440x900, 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, not sure if that is all,
but I WANT it to display smaller resolutions, and just put out put them @ higher resolution without STRETCHING)

bug:
When I change the game's resolution (in game, by in game options) to widescreen,
sometimes it shifts the image left (ie. some of the left side of image is cut off, and black are left on right side).

And if I change it to another setting, and back to this resolution, it fixes it.
(some times I notice, not sure if monitor or ati catalyst control center, has on screen pop up stating something like.. centering or something)
(and I dont recall if the screen shift ONLY happens when that pop up comes on, ill do a few tests)

I got trash drivers with an ATI card... the vendor that makes the card has this terrible driver with it. It was bad enough to give me 50 fps in quake! Finally I found out that those are just no good and you have to get other kinds or even hacked drivers. How can a company make drivers so bad and actually bundle them? I mean dont programmers work on these things for months? And if it doesnt work they still release it? Typical asian product.
